U.S. Unauthorized Immigration Flows Are Down Sharply Since Mid-Decade
According to a new report from the Pew Hispanic Center, the annual inflow of unauthorized immigrants to the United States was nearly two-thirds smaller in the two years between March 2007 and March 2009 than it was from March 2000 to March 2005. Based on data from the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey and the decennial census, the report, U.S. Unauthorized Immigration Flows Are Down Sharply Since Mid-Decade (37 pages, PDF), found that the overall number of unauthorized immigrants has declined by 8 percent, from a peak of 12 million in 2007 to 11.1 million in 2009 — the first significant reversal in the growth of the unauthorized immigrant population in two decades. The center has also made available an accompanying interactive map showing that unauthorized immigrants are more geographically dispersed than in the past, although most live in California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, and New Jersey.
