Public Policy and Aging Report
The spring/summer issue of the National Academy on an Aging Society's Public Policy and Aging Report (40 pages, PDF) has seven articles devoted to the origins, benefits, and implementation challenges of the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act, a largely overlooked component of this year's healthcare reform legislation that has the potential to transform long-term healthcare financing in the United States. Funded by the SCAN Foundation, the report explains that the CLASS act will introduce a voluntary, federally administered insurance program designed to help middle-class Americans plan for long-term personal care and supportive service needs — which, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is something 70 percent of Americans over the age of 65 will require at some point in their lives.
