Philanthropy and Voluntarism

PND Connections - A Nonprofit Space Odyssey: A Capital Projects Primer In response to skyrocketing rents in the late 1990s, many nonprofit organizations initiated capital campaigns in an effort to stabilize their lease costs, only to see the recent economic downturn undermine their efforts. To address long-term space needs in the nonprofit sector, consulting and training firm CompassPoint Nonprofit Services has published a booklet to help nonprofit leaders, donors, and foundations better understand capital projects, campaign feasibility, and the business planning involved. A Nonprofit Space Odyssey: A Capital Projects Primer (24 pages, PDF) guides readers through the pre-development phase of a capital project, offers planning and financing options, and discusses issues such as organizational readiness and possible co-location with partner organizations. Produced with funding from the American Leadership Forum, Silicon Valley, the report primarily focuses on nonprofit space needs in the Bay Area but provides valuable information for groups in other areas as well.
