Are Women Entrepreneurs Different From Men?
According to a new report from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, women remain underrepresented among business founders, particularly in high-growth fields. Based on a survey of more than five hundred founders of successful, high-growth businesses, the report, Are Women Entrepreneurs Different From Men? (16 pages, PDF), found few differences and many similarities between successful male and female entrepreneurs in the areas of background, education, motivations for starting a business, and beliefs about key success factors. For example, more than half of all respondents, male and female alike, cited the desire to build wealth, the wish to capitalize on a business idea they had, and the lack of appeal of working for someone else as reasons for becoming entrepreneurs. Women, however, were more concerned than men about the challenge of protecting intellectual capital, while men tended to worry more than women about the inherent financial insecurity associated with starting a business.
