Following the Money: How the 50 States Rate in Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data The U.S. PIRG Education Fund has issued a report that rates U.S. states on the transparency of their public sector spending data. Funded by the Ford Foundation, the report, Following the Money: How the 50 States Rate in Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data (49 pages, PDF), gave seven states — Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, Missouri, and Pennsylvania — a rating of A or B for having searchable Web sites that provide comprehensive information on a range of government expenditures. All told, thirty-two states provide online access to "checkbook-level" information about individual government expenditures, while eighteen either do not offer spending transparency Web sites or their sites are insufficiently detailed.
