Education

The MetLife Survey of the American Teacher: Collaborating for Student Success The MetLife Foundation has issued the third installment in an annual series of surveys that examines the state of the teaching profession. Conducted in November, The MetLife Survey of the American Teacher: Collaborating for Student Success, Part 3: Teaching as a Career (14 pages, PDF) found that 75 percent of respondents said they would like to continue working in education beyond their scheduled retirement from classroom teaching; 37 percent said they would be interested in a "hybrid" teaching role combining part-time classroom teaching with other roles in a school or district; and 59 percent said they were very satisfied with teaching as a career — a ratio that hasn't changed much in recent years but is significantly higher than the 40 percent "very satisfied" level reported in 1984, the first year of the survey. The first two installments — on effective teaching and leadership (19 pages, PDF) and student achievement (17 pages, PDF) — were released in January and February, respectively.
