Civil and Human Rights

Saving Lives, Promoting Democracy, Alleviating Poverty, and Fighting AIDS: The Case for Funding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Populations The Arcus Foundation has issued a report that examines the ways in which increased support for organizations that advocate on behalf of LGBT individuals can help advance key development priorities around the globe. The report, Saving Lives, Promoting Democracy, Alleviating Poverty, and Fighting AIDS: The Case for Funding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Populations (24 pages, PDF), found that although organizations working to support LGBT populations receive less than one one-hundredth of 1 percent of the total aid donated by countries affiliated with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, such organizations have helped to protect minorities, promote the rule of law, reduce poverty, strengthen civil society, increase economic opportunity, and promote health in some of the world's poorest and most politically unstable countries. Many of these organizations have also helped donor nations advance the goals set forth in the UN Statement on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation, and Gender Identity, a declaration signed by sixty-seven nations that condemns human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
