Connections - Lemelson-MIT Invention Index Established in 1994 with funding from the Lemelson Foundation, the Lemelson-MIT Program has issued the results of its annual Invention Index, which examines American attitudes toward invention and innovation. This year, the survey found that 77 percent of U.S. teens were interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while 85 percent said they wished they knew more about STEM. At the same time, a majority of teens said they might be discouraged from pursuing a STEM profession because they did not know anyone who works in a STEM field and/or because they lacked a basic understanding of those disciplines and what people in STEM fields do.
