Connections - George Washington: A National Treasure The Smithsonian Institution's online exhibition, George Washington: A National Treasure, is based on the iconic "Lansdowne" portrait of the first president painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1796 — a painting that has long been on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and was officially purchased by the museum with funds provided by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. The exhibition offers interactive versions of the portrait for adults and children, including information on the symbolic, biographic, and artistic significance of the painting, as well as a timeline of Washington's life, teacher and family guides, and games and activities.
