The State of World Population 2009
According to a new report from the United Nations Population Fund, women bear the disproportionate burden of climate change but have been largely overlooked in the debate about how to address climate change-related problems such as rising seas, melting glaciers, severe droughts, and extreme weather events. The report, The State of World Population 2009, found that the poor are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change and that the majority of the 1.5 billion people around the world living on $1 a day or less are women. Indeed, because women are more likely than men to die as a result of natural disasters, including those related to extreme weather, the gap is most pronounced where incomes are low and status differences between men and women are high.
