Transitional Jobs Reentry Demonstration As part of its Transitional Jobs Reentry Demonstration Project, which is examining the potential of transitional jobs (TJ) programs as a way to increase employment and reduce recidivism among men recently released from prison, the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation has issued a new policy brief, Transitional Jobs Reentry Demonstration (20 pages, PDF). The brief compares TJ programs in Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, and St. Paul with job search assistance programs, which tend to be simpler and less expensive than TJ efforts because they help participants look for work but do not provide subsidized jobs. According to the brief, the TJ programs were able to place approximately 85 percent of participants in transitional jobs, where participants worked for an average of four months. A more detailed follow-up report is planned for the summer of 2010.
