PND Connections - Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association's Arts Action Plan
The not-for-profit Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association has unveiled a fifteen-year Arts Action Plan to promote the Northeast Minneapolis neighborhood as an arts enclave. The plan's proposals include storefront art displays, an art-space rehabilitation program operated by the Minneapolis Community Development Agency, and the establishment of a new nonprofit organization that would raise money and buy development rights from building owners in order to keep rents affordable for artists. The plan is based on a report (160 pages, PDF) commissioned by NEMAA and funded by the McKnight Foundation that estimates that as many as five hundred professional artists live or work in the twelve square miles of the neighborhood. The Minneapolis City Council, which designated the area as an arts district in December, is also participating in the plan by working to modify zoning and building codes to support arts activities.
