Reinventing the Federal Role in Education: Supporting the Goal of College and Career Readiness for All Students The Alliance for Excellent Education has issued a new policy brief arguing that education policy at the federal level needs to change significantly for all students in the nation to graduat from high school prepared for college and beyond. The brief, Reinventing the Federal Role in Education: Supporting the Goal of College and Career Readiness for All Students (11 pages, PDF), offers recommendations for how to improve the No Child Left Behind Act, which the organization regards as too lax where it should be firm and too rigid where it needs to be more flexible. To that end, the brief argues that federal policy should permit state and local policy makers, administrators, and educators to make data-driven decisions about how to improve student achievement, rather than adhere to a one-size-fits-all approach.
