Civil Society

PND Connections - The Civic Mission of Schools The United States was built on a vision of democracy in which citizens participate in civic activities to build strong communities, solve local and national problems, and pursue the common good. In recent decades, however, large numbers of Americans have turned away from civic responsibilities such as voting and staying informed about public affairs. Recognizing that citizenship is a lifelong process and not a birthright, a new report from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE) argues that individuals must be educated for citizenship, as they are for any important endeavor. Written and endorsed by a group of more than fifty scholars and practitioners, the report, The Civic Mission of Schools (44 pages, PDF), reviews the evidence in favor of civic education in K-12 schools and provides, among other things, a list of practical recommendations for educators, policymakers, funders, researchers, and anyone else worried about the future of our democracy.
