PND Connections - "Race-Sensitive Admissions: Back to Basics," Chronicle Review
As the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments challenging the constitutionality of race-sensitive admissions policies at the University of Michigan, the Chronicle of Higher Education has published an article by William G. Bowen and Neil L. Rudenstine, both former university presidents, that supports affirmative action in college admissions. "Race-Sensitive Admissions: Back to Basics" (21 pages, PDF) includes nine propositions about race and admissions — from the importance of diversity in education to the fairness of standardized admissions tests — and is intended to clear up misconceptions about important issues that are often oversimplified or overlooked in the national debate about affirmative action. Bowen, who served as president of Princeton University from 1972 to 1988, is currently president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, while Rudenstine, who was president of Harvard University from 1991 to 2001, is chairman of ARTstor, a project of the Mellon Foundation.
