To encourage foundations to help strengthen the boards of their grantees, FSG Social Impact Advisors and BoardSource have issued a new report, Advancing Good Governance: How Grantmakers Invest in the Governance of Nonprofit Organizations (40 pages, PDF). Funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the report makes the case for funding nonprofit governance activities and offers advice from grantmakers about important first steps, including addressing governance issues on the funder's own board first, listening closely to stakeholders, and easing into the work. The report also contains ideas and suggestions for grantmakers already funding nonprofit governance activities.
