Racial Differences in Incident Heart Failure Among Young Adults
A recent Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded report published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that heart failure hits African Americans in their thirties and forties at the same rate as it hits Caucasians in their fifties and sixties. According to the report, Racial Differences in Incident Heart Failure Among Young Adults, 1 percent of African-American men and women develop heart failure at an average age of thirty-nine — twenty times the rate of Caucasians. And heart failure in African Americans was found to be associated with risk factors that were already present when these adults were in their twenties, including hypertension and obesity. The report recommends that patients, including young adults, and physicians and be made more aware of the risk factors so that they can take action to mitigate them.
