Re-Forming Health Care: Americans Speak Out About Chronic Conditions and the Pursuit of Healthier Lives According to a recent National Council on Aging report, many chronic disease sufferers are not receiving the heath care they need. Based on a survey of more than a thousand Americans ages 44 and older suffering from at least one chronic illness, the report, Re-Forming Health Care: Americans Speak Out About Chronic Conditions and the Pursuit of Healthier Lives (summary, 9 pages, PDF), found that although 71 percent of respondents said they are frequently or sometimes living in pain, 25 percent said they have delayed health care or not filled much-needed prescriptions due to cost in the past year. Making matters worse, 57 percent of those surveyed said their healthcare providers have not asked whether they have help to manage their problems. The report was funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies and the California HealthCare Foundation.
