Making Change: How Social Movements Work and How to Support Them The University of Southern California's Program for Environmental and Regional Equity has issued a new report that examines the characteristics of successful social movements as well as the history of philanthropic support for those movements. Funded by the California Endowment, the report, Making Change: How Social Movements Work and How to Support Them (62 pages, PDF), finds that social movements have historically been difficult to fund sustainably, in part because some grantmakers seek immediate measurable outcomes. In recent years, however, there has been renewed philanthropic interest in investing in social movements, community organizing, and policy reform. The report also provides information on potential funding opportunities in the social movement arena.
