America's Uninsured Crisis: Consequences for Health and Health Care The week of March 22 is Cover the Uninsured Week, an annual campaign sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to increase awareness of the nation's uninsured. To mark this year's event, the Institute of Medicine, in partnership with RWJF, has issued a new report which finds that the growing number of uninsured Americans — some 45.7 million in 2007 — is taking a significant toll on the nation's health. The report, America's Uninsured Crisis: Consequences for Health and Health Care (executive summary, 6 pages, PDF), recommends that the Obama administration work with Congress and public and private sector leaders to reduce healthcare costs as well as the rate of increase in per capita healthcare spending.
