California's Proposition 8: What Happened, and What Does the Future Hold?
According to a new report from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, party affiliation, political ideology, church/synagogue attendance, and age were the driving forces behind the passage of California's Proposition 8, which eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry, last fall. Based on a precinct-by-precinct analysis of the vote, the report, California's Proposition 8: What Happened, and What Does the Future Hold? (16 pages, PDF), found that roughly 59 percent of African Americans supported Proposition 8 — significantly less than the 70 percent figure reported the night of the election. Indeed, after taking into account the effect of church attendance, support for Proposition 8 among African Americans and Latinos was not significantly different than that of other groups. The report also found that support for marriage equality has grown substantially across almost all California demographic groups except Republicans.
