The State of Connecticut Public Education: A 2008 Report Card
According to a new report from the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN), the achievement gap between poor and non-poor students in the state is the largest in the country and increased to record levels this year. The report, The State of Connecticut Public Education: A 2008 Report Card (27 pages, PDF), found that Connecticut students score below students in Hungary — a country whose per-capita income is a quarter of Connecticut's — in math; that poor and Hispanic students in the state score below those in Moldova, a country whose per-capita income is approximately 5 percent of Connecticut's; and that African-American students in the state score just above students in Egypt and Palestine. On a brighter note, several schools across the state showed sustained progress in closing the achievement gap for African-American, Hispanic, and low-income students.
