A Developmental Perspective on College and Workplace Readiness
A new report from Child Trends identifies several critical gaps in the criteria used by colleges and employers to determine the competence of young applicants. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the report, A Developmental Perspective on College and Workplace Readiness (49 pages, PDF), recommends expanding college readiness criteria to include healthy behaviors, positive mental health, and a strong work ethic; workplace readiness criteria to include social support and a sense of purpose; and healthy youth development criteria to include the ability to reason and specific communication skills needed by employers.
