PND Connections - From Place to Place: Learning from Innovations in Health Policy Because of their role as guardians of the public health as well as their proximity to the front lines of healthcare delivery, state governments have long been considered leaders in changing and improving healthcare policy in the United States. In an essay titled From Place to Place: Learning from Innovations in Health Policy (13 pages, PDF), Commonwealth Fund president Karen Davis discusses the ways that the Fund supports state efforts to expand health insurance coverage, extend drug benefits to seniors, foster the healthy development of children, raise nursing home quality, and improve care for underserved populations. The Fund, Davis notes, continually mines healthcare practices across the nation and the globe in an effort to identify strategies that improve access to and enhance the quality of halth care. The essay, which introduces the Fund's 2002 Annual Report, also shows that paying close attention to the experiences of state government can lead to new solutions for longstanding problems within the nation's healthcare system.
