Prevention for a Healthier California: Investments in Disease Prevention Yield Significant Savings, Stronger Communities According to a new report from the Trust for America's Health and the Prevention Institute, an investment of $10 per person, per year, in proven community-based disease prevention programs could save California's healthcare system $1.7 billion within five years — a return of $4.80 for every $1. Funded by the California Endowment, the report, Prevention for a Healthier California: Investments in Disease Prevention Yield Significant Savings, Stronger Communities (44 pages, PDF), found that in ten to twenty years an investment in such programs — including those designed to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and prevent smoking and other tobacco use — could grow to more than $1.9 billion annually.
