PND Connections - Tough Love, h magazine Last summer, the Heinz Endowments and two other Pittsburgh foundations — the Grable Foundation and the Pittsburgh Foundation — announced that they would suspend funding to the Pittsburgh Public School District because of worrisome changes in the district's governance, leadership, and fiscal discipline. The cover story of the latest edition of h (44 pages, PDF), the quarterly publication of the Heinz Endowments, explores the thinking that went into the decision and what the Endowments hope to accomplish by it. "Tough Love," by executive director Maxwell King and associate director Grant Oliphant, provides an in-depth look at the facts and values that influenced the Endowments' decision, including its growing emphasis on evaluation and accountability. The article also discusses the very public nature of the announcement. "There are times," write Maxwell and Oliphant, "and this was one of them — when the only way a foundation can remain true to its mission is to set aside the field's deeply ingrained nurturing instincts and make some noise."
