Substance Abuse

A Light in the Dark: Health Services for Drug Users in St. Petersburg The Open Society Institute's International Harm Reduction Development Program has released a three-minute video detailing the work of one of its grantees, the Humanitarian Action Fund, which fights for the health and human rights of injection-drug users in St. Petersburg, Russia. The group operates a mobile clinic that offers clean needles and syringes, condoms, psychological counseling, blood testing, basic medical services, and information about safer injecting, HIV, and hepatitis to drug users in the city, where some 70 percent of HIV cases are the result of injection-drug use. In the video, "A Light in the Dark: Health Services for Drug Users in St. Petersburg," the organization's founder Sasha Tsekhanovich notes that "all drug users are first of all human beings....We have to try to find a complex approach to the problem."
