The Integration of Immigrants and Their Families in Maryland
The Urban Institute has released the first report in a two-part series looking at immigrant integration in the context of the Maryland workforce and the communities in which immigrants live. Funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the report, The Integration of Immigrants and Their Families in Maryland (52 pages, PDF), finds that the dramatic increase in immigrant workforce participation in the state does not appear to have displaced a significant number of native-born workers regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. The report also found that Maryland's immigrant population and workforce is more highly skilled than the national average, though it includes many workers with limited formal schooling, literacy skills, and the ability to read, write, and speak English. The authors recommend greater investment in education and training to bridge the literacy and language gap for both immigrants and native-born workers.
