L.A. Art Online: Learning from the Getty's Electronic Cataloguing Initiative
Launched in 1997 when many museums were just beginning to develop Web sites, the Getty Foundation's electronic cataloguing initiative is designed to help Los Angeles museums and visual arts organizations make information about their collections available online. A new report from the foundation, L.A. Art Online: Learning from the Getty's Electronic Cataloguing Initiative (48 pages, PDF), examines the successes and challenges of the initiative and provides resources for other organizations seeking to fund or develop similar programs. The report emphasizes the importance of planning and sustainability and includes case studies of two of its grantees, the Fowler Museum at UCLA and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
