Given Half a Chance: The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males
Over the past five years, the Schott Foundation for Public Education has released a series of reports examining the low graduation rates, high rates of placement in special education, and disproportionate use of suspensions and expulsions among African-American students characteristic of the U.S. public education system. The foundation's latest report, Given Half a Chance: The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males (executive summary, 18 pages, PDF), has been released in conjunction with an accompanying Web site that provides easy access to state and national data. Among other things, this year's report found that more than half of African American males did not receive diplomas with their cohort during the 2005-06 school year, and that the state of New York has three of the ten districts with the lowest graduation rates for African American males.
