Career Academies: Long-Term Impacts on Labor Market Outcomes, Educational Attainment, and Transitions to Adulthood Established more than thirty years ago, the Career Academies high school reform initiative aims to keep students engaged in school and prepare them for successful transitions to post-secondary education and employment. According to a fifteen-year MDRC study of the initiative, while Career Academies provide viable pathways to a range of post-secondary education opportunities, they do not appear to be more effective than options available to those who didn't participate in the initiative. The study, Career Academies: Long-Term Impacts on Labor Market Outcomes, Educational Attainment, and Transitions to Adulthood (63 pages, PDF), was funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and the American Express, Charles Stewart Mott, Citigroup, and James Irvine foundations.
