Californians and Information Technology
According to a new Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) survey, more than half of all Californians regularly go online to get news, make purchases, look for health information, or visit government Web sites. Although many of the state's residents have integrated the Internet into their daily lives, the survey (40 pages, PDF) also found that the digital divide is widening for some groups — especially Latino and low-income residents. Less than half of California Latinos (48 percent) have computers at home, compared to about 80 percent of whites, Asians, and African Americans. And among households with incomes under $40,000, only 40 percent have home Internet access. Funded by the California Emerging Technology Fund and ZeroDivide, the survey is the first in PPIC's Californians and Information Technology series.
