PND Connections - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Many Americans who have the day off on Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will spend the holiday working in their communities to commemorate Dr. King's life and teachings. The MLK Day Web site from the Corporation for National and Community Service helps people find out how to participate in service projects because, as Dr. King once said, "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." The site offers links to resources such as the state-by-state directory of service events scheduled for MLK Day created by the Raleigh/Wake Martin Luther King Celebration Committee. For those who wish to start their own project or plan one for next year, the site offers an MLK Day of Service Toolkit in both HTML and PDF formats. The guide includes ideas for projects, as well as information on getting started, recruiting and working with volunteers, building partnerships, and encouraging media outlets to cover events. It also features descriptions of previous projects, a sample schedule of events, and suggestions for following up on the effort.
