Arts and Culture

An Unfinished Canvas SRI International has released two reports — both funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation — that examine the effects of a 2006 increase in state funding for arts education programs in California, with an emphasis on the impact of funding and time on elementary arts education. The first, An Unfinished Canvas: Allocating Funding and Instructional Time for Elementary Arts Education (48 pages, PDF), found that elementary school principals identified inadequate funding and insufficient instructional time as significant barriers to providing arts education. According to the second, An Unfinished Canvas: Teacher Preparation, Instructional Delivery, and Professional Development in the Arts (138 pages, PDF), California is far from meeting its goal of providing a standards-aligned course of study in dance, music, theater, and visual arts.
