Economic Mobility in America

Is America still the land of opportunity? A new report from the Pew Charitable Trusts' Economic Mobility Project suggests that in light of slowing economic growth and widening income gaps, the promise of upward mobility is an empty promise for many Americans. In Getting Ahead or Losing Ground: Economic Mobility in America (120 pages, PDF), researchers at the Brookings Institution analyzed generational trends in the economic mobility of immigrants, women and men, and black and white families, and also examined the role of education and family background in promoting upward mobility. The study's conclusion: Relative mobility in the U.S. has remained flat or declined slightly since about 1970, especially for those at the bottom of the economic ladder.
