Anti-Tuberculosis Drug Resistance in the World

The WHO/IUATLD Global Project on Anti-tuberculosis Drug Resistance Surveillance has found that current rates of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) are among the highest ever recorded. Based on data collected between 2002 and 2006 on ninety thousand TB patients, the report, Anti-Tuberculosis Drug Resistance in the World — Report No. 4 (142 pages, PDF), identifies forty-five countries in which extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) — a virtually untreatable form of the disease — has been recorded. With nearly half a million new cases of MDR-TB a year, the highest rate of infection was in Baku, Azerbaijan, where nearly a quarter of all new TB cases were reported as multidrug-resistant.
