Return on Investment: The Economic Impact of the Nonprofit Sector in Colorado
While the nonprofit sector in Colorado is a significant economic and social force, a new study finds that it nevertheless trails its counterparts in other states. According to Return on Investment: The Economic Impact of the Nonprofit Sector in Colorado (44 pages, PDF), the comparatively modest impact of the sector is largely the result of reduced funding and the relatively low level of charitable giving by Colorado residents. Published jointly by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies, the Colorado Nonprofit Association, and Corona Research, Inc., the report recommends four strategies to improve the situation: improving the nonprofit sector's visibility and credibility, strengthening nonprofit partnerships with governments, encouraging increased charitable giving by individuals, and building the capacity of nonprofit organizations.
