Charting the Midwest: An Inventory and Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in America's Heartland While Congress and the other G8 countries consider how climate change is likely to affect future policies, a new report from the World Resources Institute argues that states in the American Midwest must play a leadership role in the climate change debate. Funded by the Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium and the Energy, Joyce and Robertson foundations, Charting the Midwest: An Inventory and Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in America's Heartland (84 pages, PDF) analyzed the greenhouse gas emissions of Midwestern states from 1990 to 2003 and found that Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin accounted for nearly 25 percent of total U.S. emissions and 5 percent of world emissions, with the electric generation, transportation, and industrial energy use sectors accounting for three-quarters of the region's greenhouse gas emissions.
