Climate Change and Great Lakes Water Resources According to climate scientists, as the earth gets warmer it will experience increased regional variability in precipitation and more frequent heavy precipitation events while becoming more susceptible to drought. A new report published by the National Wildlife Federation examines how these trends could have a profound impact on the Great Lakes. Funded by the C.S. Mott Foundation, the report, Climate Change and Great Lakes Water Resources (44 pages, PDF), looks at how climate change will impact water resources, identifies policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, and outlines how the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact, if enacted, could give the region an opportunity to make improvements in water resource policy and better protect the Great Lakes from the adverse consequences of climate change.
