Hispanics/Latinos

English Language Usage Among Hispanics The Pew Hispanic Center analyzed six surveys it conducted from 2002 to 2006 and found that only 23 percent of Latino immigrants report being able to speak English very well, while 88 percent of their U.S.-born adult children claim they are able to do so. According to English Usage Among Hispanics in the United States (27 pages, PDF), the latter figure jumps to 94 percent among later generations, and reading abilities in English show similar improvement. Among the major Hispanic-origin groups living in the U.S., Puerto Ricans and South Americans are the most likely to say they are proficient in English and Mexicans the least likely.
