Philanthropy and Voluntarism

Nonprofit Service Organizations and Civic Engagement: Addressing Challenges and Moving Forward Earlier this year, the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund helped convene a group to discuss the efforts of nonprofit service organizations to build democracy in the United States. The mini-conference, which included representatives of the Alliance for Children and Families, the Minnesota Council on Nonprofits, and the Nonprofit Voter Engagement Project, led to a report, Nonprofit Service Organizations and Civic Engagement: Addressing Challenges and Moving Forward (14 pages, PDF), that explores how different forms of civic engagement can be integrated into the work of the nonprofit sector, especially among organizations that provide services. According to the report, attendees pledged to provide, within a year, a way to quantitatively and qualitatively measure civic engagement, "brand" it for mass and targeted audiences, and integrate civic engagement practices into the training of nonprofit staff and boards.
