Civil and Human Rights

"We Have Degrees in Violence": A Report on Torture and Human Rights Abuses in Zimbabwe In conjunction with international Human Rights Day on December 10, the Open Society Institute has released a report which provides evidence that the Zimbabwean government is systematically using torture and violence to suppress political opposition. Based on forensic evaluations by international health professionals, the report, "We Have Degrees in Violence": A Report on Torture and Human Rights Abuses in Zimbabwe (62 pages, PDF), documents how victims of political violence in the African country have been tortured and subjected to other abuses, including being denied appropriate medical and legal assistance, and how the violence targets everyone, from low-level political organizers and ordinary citizens to prominent members of the political opposition.
