Legacy pollution issues abound in poor countries and cause significant damage to local populations. A new report from the Blacksmith Institute, Cost Effectiveness and Health Impact of Remediation of Highly Polluted Sites in the Developing World (9 pages, PDF), looks at four locations where pollution has caused health problems and where the pollutants have been or are about to be cleaned up with the institute's intervention. By estimating the resulting health impact and cost benefits using established epidemiological data and methodologies, the institute found that remediation of highly polluted sites is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve life expectancy in the developing world.
