Critical Condition: Examining the Scope of Medical Services in South Los Angeles The south Los Angeles area is among the most disadvantaged and underserved communities in California, according to a new report funded by the California Endowment. In fact, more people die of lung cancer, stroke, diabetes, and heart disease in south L.A. than in any other part of the city. The study, Critical Condition: Examining the Scope of Medical Services in South Los Angeles (114 pages, PDF), also found that patients from the area routinely face longer waiting times for a doctor's appointment than other residents in the county and that they often have to wait up to twelve months to see a specialist.
