Schools Need Good Leaders Now: State Progress in Creating a Learning-Centered School Leadership System After examining the progress of fourteen states working to achieve school leadership goals, the Southern Regional Education Board found that the pace of change in nearly every state was modest at best. According to Schools Need Good Leaders Now: State Progress in Creating a Learning-Centered School Leadership System (40 pages, PDF), only Alabama, Louisiana, and Maryland have achieved "promising" progress on several indicators, with Louisiana setting the pace. Part of the Wallace Foundation-funded Challenge to Lead series, the report recommends several strategies designed to accelerate progress, including choosing the right people for the job, getting university leadership programs on track, making sure aspiring principals learn on the job, using licensing power to drive reform, making low-performing schools a top priority, and learning from the pacesetters.
