Tobacco Tax Benefits for Oregon: Reducing Smoking, Saving Lives, and Saving Money
According to a new report from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a proposed 84.5 percent increase in Oregon's state cigarette tax would not only fund health care for more than one hundred thousand children in the state, it would also reduce youth smoking and save thousands of lives. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the report, Tobacco Tax Benefits for Oregon: Reducing Smoking, Saving Lives, and Saving Money (23 pages, PDF), finds that increasing the price of cigarettes is one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking, especially among children and pregnant women. The report also estimates that the proposed cigarette tax increase in Ballot Measure Fifty would produce more than $662 million in long-term healthcare savings for the state over the lifetime of smokers who quit or never start the habit.
