Recess Rules: Why the Undervalued Playtime May Be America's Best Investment for Healthy Kids and Healthy Schools While schools and students face ever-more pressure to improve their performance on standardized tests, only 36 percent of American children meet doctors' recommendations for physical activity. Based on several sources of data, Recess Rules: Why the Undervalued Playtime May Be America's Best Investment for Healthy Kids and Healthy Schools (20 pages, PDF), a new report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, identifies a number of opportunities for increasing children's physical activity and examines the factors that contribute to or impair efforts to maximize those opportunities. The report also focuses on one model — Sports4Kids — that addresses children's health through play and raises questions about funding disparities that exist in the field of physical activity.
