Increasing Latino Participation in the Nursing Profession: Best Practices at California Nursing Programs
Although there are 2.2 million registered nurses in the United States — more people than are working in any other occupation in the healthcare industry — the country is facing a nursing shortage as older nurses retire and fewer people enter the field. Many experts believe that increasing the participation of minorities in nursing is a key factor in addressing the shortage. A new report from the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, Increasing Latino Participation in the Nursing Profession: Best Practices at California Nursing Programs (68 pages, PDF), finds that while some barriers affected all students, others, such as financial and pre-college educational challenges and a lack of Latinos in leadership roles, were more salient to the socioeconomic and cultural attributes of the Latino population. The report was funded by the California Wellness Foundation.
