Two Decades of American News Preferences According to Two Decades of American News Preferences (36 pages, PDF), a new report from the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, Americans' news interests and preferences have remained surprisingly static across three different "news eras" — network news, cable news, and online news — since the 1980s. Moreover, preferences for specific types of news stories have remained relatively constant, with disaster news garnering the greatest public interest followed by financial news, while foreign news and tabloid news have consistently ranked at the bottom of the center's index.
