Philanthropic Opportunities in Correctional Health Care
Jails and prisons represent one of the largest target populations for public health services in America, yet most states tend to take a minimalist approach when it comes to providing funds for correctional health care, especially in states where care for the broader population also is inadequate. Commissioned by the Jacob and Valeria Langeloth Foundation, Philanthropic Opportunities in Correctional Health Care (39 pages, PDF) examines the history of correctional health care, discusses recent best practices and lessons learned, and offers a number of recommendations for foundations interested in the field. They include support for increased access to Medicaid funds, policy advocacy and system reform, gender-specific health care, curricula development, and support services to families of offenders.
